Have you ever met with someone, even casually, thinking they may be a good prospect, but weren’t sure how to get the conversation going? There is an art to it. All those annoying telemarketers and retailers have taught us a lot.

This is an example of an open-ended question vs. closed. We don’t want to make it too easy for them to say no. This is one of the secrets that can help.

One of my favorite questions to use is, “How’s your business going?” Without focusing specifically on marketing, the door is open for them to respond in a variety of ways, leaving room for me to customize my response. Many business problems can be solved with marketing solutions so I don’t want to play my hand too soon.

I’ve been writing conversation starter scripts for clients lately. They come with instructions and suggestions on how to steer the conversation. Technically, it’s a sales script, but the focus is really on relationship development.
